Laboratory of Biochemical Engineering
The Laboratory of Biochemical Engineering (LBE) was established in November 2020 within the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Greece. Our mission is to understand the interplay between upstream bioprocessing conditions and cellular metabolism in order to develop more efficient bioprocesses.
At LBE we employ a combined mathematical modelling and experimental approach for the design of novel bioprocesses and/or bioprocessing techniques with a focus on biopharmaceuticals, CO2 bio-sequestration and agro-industrial waste valorisation. Our expertise spans across mammalian, algal, and bacterial cell cultures, and we're breaking new ground by venturing into the realm of fungi-based bioprocess development. Our main activities include:
- Experimental characterisation (Design of Experiments) and mathematical analysis (metabolic modelling) of cell metabolism under industrial bioprocessing conditions
- Multi-scale, dynamic, hybrid data- and knowledge driven mathematical models (Parameter Estimation, Sensitivity Analysis, model-based optimisation)
- Development of novel, low-cost bespoke bioreactor systems (bubble column and solid state bioreactors)
